You're just an hour after me. And Mr.Lucky Black just felt like rubbing it into you again.
Edit: ...
Your 1 hour before me and you play in US how do you manage that?!

You need 2^(n-1) lvl 1 stones to make a lvl n stone
So, if you want a level 12 stone, you need 2^(12-1)= 2^11=2048 lvl 1 stones to complete it.
Note: n is the level stone you want.

Why make it that advanced, you could just make it into 2^11, people would understand it a lot better :P
I do understand the need to show off that you know the right calculation, but he is a specific question, so 2^11 would be plenty <3 (2048)
Other options would include labeling your n as the lvl stone you want to make, like this:
2^(n-1) where n is the lvl you want to achieve by merging lvl 1 spirit stones, in this case:
2^(12-1) = 2048.
A lot easier to understand ^^
xD
