They take what you activated, they wont take loose I don't think.  But haven't investigated closely enough to be sure.

Yet another feature that doesn't work upon being released.  Took my 50 gold and didn't give me jack shit back, way to lose my 1500 or so fragments cause you idiots can't properly implement code.
