Bonds - Unable to upgrade Sado

I'm trying to get a first bond for Sado. I have 3 stars on stage one, I have Yachiru as well and I put her in assistance team.
I cleared first stage with only main and Sado (no zanpaktou), yet I'm unable to upgrade him.
Anyone has an idea?
