What is limit for characters you can have?

I have 27 at the moment and mungetsu rank will open two more. How many more slots can i buy before i reach limit? thanks..

I have not yet bought slots, but I noticed that limit does not apply to partners who are activated from inventory, I have now 18/16

the limit is the total number of partners that exist... it just keeps getting more expensive to buy slots
