In pve it depends on the van the zan and the team comp but you can get away without one. In pvp at higher tiers yes they matter a lot

me im running without vanguard in pvp but i use noza vs ryoka

vanguards are life in PVP...  or my Noza is, lol
being a contender without a vang is very expensive

stacking a vang does not ensure victory...  you must build him right, get the right vang, and have a zanapcto that doesn't hate them...  I know my 1.11M BP Noza can one man army teams with 4m+ BP (highest BP I've soloed with him was roughly 5.7M in HMA)

also, running Noza in Ryoka before they can kill your assaulter row with regular attacks in 2 or so rounds is silly as you lose out on SOOOOOO much block damage it isn't funny
