Auto Battle question

So ive recently gotten high enough VIP that I can auto battle instances, but heres were it gets weird.  Im aware that as long as I don't speed up the battles, I SHOULD be spending zero coupons.  I click the option to auto, and it shows 22 minutes, but the timer doesnt go down.  So naturally, believeing I need to click auto for it to start, I do and BOOM, 22 coupons gone.

Annoyingly, I restart the second run, and now the timer does go down normally, but I still lose coupons.  Do I have to do these things manually, or is something going wrong?
