I used to have a hard time understanding aid rate too, from what I tested I understand it like this:
When a character triggers "aid" he is going to split the damage he takes with the character with the most hp in your formation. That can result in weak characters surviving and strong characters dying from AOE if you are not careful, because the strong character will take a high extra damage by aiding the weak character in addition of the damage he received on his own. The best solution is to have a big hp tank vg to be sure to absorb all the damage from AOE or to ban weak character with high aid rate (I used to have this problem when I was still using Urahara causing perfectly good partner to die with his stupid 20% aid rate,).
Example (the figures are made up but it is the idea of a situation I experimented) main (500000 hp), hiki( 1000000 hp), urahara (600000 hp) takes an AOE :
if Urahara does not trigger aid rate : Urahara takes 1000000 dmg from AOE and dies, Hiki takes 500000 and survives , main takes 450000 dmg and survives
if Urahara triggers aid rate : he passes extra 500000 (half of his damage) to hiki because hiki got most hp than main, hiki ends up taking 1000000 total dmg which kills her, Uaraha survives with 100000 hp, main takes same damage as before
