Do the character bonuses appear as buffs that can be overridden by another buff, or is it something internal?

I ask because Tensa gives a crit damage bonus to Mugetsu, but Berserk Renji already has a crit damage buffing skill. Is it useless?

No they do not. They are pAssive boosts that take place invisibly. I can confirm this because I have TSI and Tensa.
