Is this event similar to Ryoka/ES where damage can be maximized by using a vanguard-less formation? Or is the VG needed to absorb damage?

You will die in one round, yeah.

You will likely be killed by blocks if your team is fast enough AND you have enough hit rate not have them dodge you, so each member of your team's first moves will be their last moves.

Whereas in Ryoka and ES you can use combos and critical hits, that is not possible in Void Region. At least, it's not very likely for the majority of players.
