I'm just wondering because it feels like I'm pretty far off and can only do like 30% damage per hit on them.

bp doesn't mean anything for it. It's all about damage dealing capability + survivability

Should I have a vanguard for wave 70 then? I've been trying to go without and maximize my damage.

If you can't survive til the last round then yes you need a vanguard. I've built myself tanky enough to not need one though
