if im not mistaken, all captain zan are in sleep mode . they only use shikai/bankai when a fight begin. also when zaraki activate nozarashi, he didnt say bankai.
considering he never know his sword name before, he shouldnt be able to use shikai until now.
remember ichigo training with uruhara?
thats when he first learn about his zan name.
since that day, his sword always in shikai mode.
meanwhile zaraki never ask his zan name until recently.

In the Soul Society Saga kenpachi says to Ichigo "My sword doesn't have a sealed form. You see its my spiritual pressure its so huge that even with all my might I couldn't seal it even if I wanted to. What you see here is the true form of my zanpakuto" His sword is like Ichigo always in the Shikai state because of the spiritual pressure.
I've had to argue to many of my friends that is the case. Then I show them the Kenpachi fight episode and point out that line. I really pay attention to every detail when I'm watching anime, and I've watched all of bleach about 4 times already.
Even Yoruichi during ichigos Bankai training compares zangetsu to kenpachi sword explain to him that it is always in the shikai state.

lol dude no it's his shikai let me explain kenpachi never obtained a shikai his sword was always in sealed ( original ) form cz based on what he said he couldn't contact with his zanpaktou due to his power ( which was definetly wrong it was because he never tried to contact with it ) that's why unohana made knepachi exceed to his limits so he knows in end that he needs to contact with his zan : nozarashi and pls don't object i readed bleach manga over 7 times so i am sure of what i am saying
