shinji is not good defensive van..try using a van based zanpakuto for trials and maps
increase his bolck as much as u can for better results in pvp ( shinji is more suited to a team that can end battles faster)

he is good or not depending on your build,

at least get vg zan for him is possible, such as tengen (free) or if you can afford to buy => hyorinmaru / senbonzakura

masquarane is right, he is more into offensive.
at least let hirako's attack high enough to help kill support after you unleashed 10th skill

with hirako  he's squisher then the average off tank so your going to need high level spirit stone ...
