I guess it depends what you want out of the gaming experience?

If you just want to have fun then stick with it, but if your objective is just to win then yea it's going to get harder and harder as there are other players who also seriously want to win and will spend a sh*tload of money to do it...

I'm VIP 0, lvl 85 now and ranked 31 in my arena. I have 4 gold left from the free gold i got in the beginning lol. And yea I spent it badly, made mistakes like all newbies, but i've had fun playing you don't have to be VIP to be strong. There's some other v strong non-VIPs on my server, some with BP of 600K in 90's lvl...so it is possible to play the game well without having to fork over the cash.

Maybe try playing without top up for a bit and see if you feel differently about it....even if you find you're still not enjoying it, then you can quit and at least you haven't spent any more money
