Because Japanese are crazy fun and 5pb. did it first. The name is after a certain video game character who personifies a company by the same name who happen to be responsible for Steins;Gate, the anime adaptation being my second favorite of all time. If you want an explanation for the dot, it's probably just because it's cool. lol.

MAGES. does actually mean something. Music Animation Games Event School. It's not really a sentence, more of a statement of interests. It can also be seen as an anagram for GAMES.
