Back in my day you had to earn in game rewards through many hours of gameplay and figuring out secrets with friends not buy them.

Indeed it technically is. That's the whole point of "Pay To Win" the person that spends the most money is the strongest, therefore people who save their money for more useful things will fall behind compared to the people who spend a lot of money on the game. Giving the money spenders an advantage.
