2^(n-1) where n is the lvl you want to achieve by merging lvl 1 spirit stones, in this case:
2^(12-1) = 2048.

Same difference. lol. I said it that way because it seemed the most general and concise way to explain it. Yes, I went for the general solution instead of first giving him specifics because the specific answer had already been given. I mean, it's so beautify, I wouldn't want to explain it any other way. You can replace n with any number from 1 to 12, and the sentence should make sense.

"You need 2^(12-1) lvl 1 stones to make a lvl 12 stone."
"You need 2^(1-1) lvl 1 stones to make a lvl 1 stone."

I guess letters scare people when it comes to substitution, but they are just too damn handy. xD Welcome to the mind of MAGES.. This is how my brain works. Puzzles and mindfuck galore! Wheeee!

2^11 people would understand the number, not how it came. Well some at least. Tho I have to say I'm surprised, I wonder if my students at high school can't even do this simple calculation, this should be basic

I agree with you 100%,
But other people who don't know maths would understand the math alot better if you either make it a simpe calculation, which i must admit, takes away the beauty of your answer, or you could add a note like in a schoolbook where it explains that "n" equals the lvl stone you want.
In that case you could take the calculation out of context and still understand it as well
