Will they both add 40% & 50% from the base def, or will the first one increase from 100% def (base def) and the second on from the new 100% (aka 140% of the original def).

Do they stack only if they are alive? and if one of them is killed, does that mean 1 of the def mod will disappear?

Halos disappear when the partner with it is killed.
