If you haven't noticed the Yellow equipment actually have 8 sockets (Spirit Stone slots), however only six of them are available.
You apparantly need Drill Stones to be able to unlock the other two from each equipment. I believe that's it. Hope this was helpful.
once you get like level 70 or 80 gold/red gear all the sockets will be open on those anyways, but amount of sockets you have on a piece of gear determines how many spirit stones you can put in
