Nope, I just verified (at the cost of 150 coupons *grrrr*).

First time I direct started it cost 50 coupons, 2nd time it costs 100 coupons.  It does "say" it is free, but it is not.

Well tbh, I think gogames might have a penalty for abusing a bug in system, so no matter what I wouldn't abuse any bugs, overall it will make the game less enjoyable for those who couldn't afford 2k gold and it will give you unfair advantage in arena against those 'equal' in strength.
