how do you socket items and what is the used for?

yes it is for extra stone socket

yes it is for extra sockets. not worth until late game. plus you need a lot of them and they are not easily accessible for cheap

11 stones for 1 socket on 1 piece of gear (for all gear under 120).  The tab is in the reinforce section, gives an extra place for a stone.  Like they said NOT worth it until late late in the game.
