If you plan to get Mugetsu, i suggest you get him in Karakara Town, he goes for 20k gold and you can use candies to lower it's price even more.

but u dont need to have available partner slots to be able to hire or get event partners exception of swp..u can be ar 20/20 and still get mugetsu making it 21/20
but yes all he needs to do is hire him to see if he's beneficial

even if you do pick up mug somewhere else, make sure you rent him for a day to get him at your level...  a quick pro tip!!

he remains in ur partner list but u cant put him back in form untill u rehirehire is best thing when u decide to buy a partner as u can work on hes mods and evo even after he expires, and when u buy him permanently u keep the mods and evo u allready done

just like akimaff said, you just can't put them in formation anymore...  however you can still level, evo, and mod them, if you put them in bond formation before they expire they will stay there giving you bonuses, and if you buy them at a later date from somewhere else, they keep everything you have done for them and they just become permanent...
