There are events that give out socket stones. Like Sereitei Attack, when you collect enough points, you exchange for them. You just have to look out for events.

Do you have Aquaria Sets? Unlock all sockets before you upgrade your gears, the lower your gear, the less socket stones required to unlock sockets.

don't upgrade it until you unlock all sockets. or the socket stones required # will go up.
